    Cherishism is an ecopolitical alternative to anthropocentrism for Life on Earth and future generations.

    Cherishism is not limited to, nor bound by, what I say. The following is the basis for further discussion. This is paramount. All need to feel empowered and local human and teresapien diversity embraced and expressed politically through each bioregion.

    Key Words

    Cherishism an ecological political system.

    Fluminism the interconnected narrative of universe, flow to and from all dimensions, a powerful form of love.

    Floloca perceiving ‘place as flowing’, not simply as human, but conscious imagination along the dynamic matrix of life and death, and at a spectrum of scales.

    Hubrigenesis the evolutionary aftermath of the biospheric violence of the Anthropocene.

    Kinnage a new kind of human/non-human community living. Where nature and fluminism is paramount, ourselves being just a part of the whole.

    Kinnaria wild places in and around cities, urban areas and kinnages. To replace ‘Green Space,’ with awildian love and meaning.

    Locacede to withdraw from a place, to directly decolonise humans from an ecological system. A replacement for ‘decolonization.’

    Nagorasphere the phenomenon of ‘exchange’ in nature, as a significant part of the biosphere.

    Symlings colloquial name for holobiont/s.

    Teresapien a positive word to use instead of ‘non-human.’

    Transilience Gap  biodiversity declines and climate changes may require more radical solutions before many people are ‘ready’ to take the risk. There is a gap or a deficit.

    Traumundi the trauma of the collective living Earth caused by climate and ecological shock.

    Vitanance being right in itself, stemming from diversity, proliferation and of the complexity of all life. As opposed to human dominion being wrong.

    Welldoing Dasein daily acts towards wellbeing for the good of all life.

    Aims

    The aim of Cherishism is human universal care for living beings  ~ Vitanance ~ and the end of Traumundi.

    All beings, bionts or symlings, depending on their diverse needs, and in interconnected flows (Fluminism), including in the nagorasphere, are cared for in the best ways possible.

    Why

    Socialism and ecosocialism, as words with meaning, are founded on a lack of intimacy. The origins of the word social are mere physical relationships between humans such as marriage and allies, stemming from PIE “sekw” ~ to follow. There is a general fear of using any terms that amount to love in its spectrum of emotional forms, expressions and intimacy of care. I want to end that fear, directly or indirectly cultivated largely by men such as Smith, Marx, Bookchin, Kovel and Löwy. The Earth’s biosphere and all its interconnected lifeforms require of us to bring cherishing central to daily life.

    As in ecosocialism, Cherishism is NOT any form of capitalist system, a machine that has been the fuel and energy for the suffocating fires of social exclusion, inequality and biospheric degradation through anthropocentric globalisation and imperialism/colonialism. Neither is it commodified emotion or acts in cash value. There should be no North/South divide. Equity and justice are intrinsic.

     

    Integral functioning

    Cherishism offers use and exchange value, but critically and centrally, ‘gift’ value, through human skill and relationship, as in the ways of nature. It is a system of generosity, compassion, creativity, love and meaning.

    Each human community within any given floloca does have the ability to exchange non-living elements with others, also to include seeds (though they are between life and death), but only produced in natural excess to the needs of their own floloca.

    Wellbeing is the consequence, and ultimate value, choice remaining essential to provide personal and collective empowerment. In this way, every living being (all life) is fundamentally of worth. Critically, human children are nurtured with great love, because we know that distress in childhood has immense negative consequences throughout life. Distress and fear, generally, is the root of so much ecological damage through fierce competition. Now is the time to end that regime and bring in a new, loving way of life.

    Technological knowledge, research and development, energy, and creativity is centred on caring. Thus, health (human or otherwise), and communications is where skill-vestment is a cultural premium and widely celebrated.

    There are no cities as we understand them now, but Kinnages and wilder Kinnarias, adaptable to changing climate and fore-wilding. This is an effort to close the Transiliance Gap and lessen the impact of hubrigenesis in the Anthropocene towards the Symbiocene. Land is commons, not limited to humans but small zones of privacy are afforded to all. Locacede and space efficiency is valued, rather than expansive development.

    Fluminescent food (eg permaculature), is ultimately a collective good, grown locally in public and private spaces and local to all. Pollution (land, air, water), is one of the most serious crimes.

    Cherishism has elements of green anarchy and mutual aid, in that personal and collective Responsibility is the Right, not Right in itself, and localism is key. At the root, all life is of worth via the protection of life-promoting existence (Praximund). True liberty is fore-established, in that it is limited to the point just before causing harm to others.

    Freedom of movement is natural, though cultivating and nurturing a sense of adopted endemism is a natural consequence of Cherishism. As in some indigenous cultures, all people (and wildlife) are welcome to a central whare rūnanga-like meeting place called a Cherish of their own ecological design with permaculture-like grounds. This is a place of beauty and knowledge exchange on best fluministic practice. It is a place of information, support and love. Its mere existence is educational and caring, whilst acting like pioneer seed nurseries, fore-newing life systems in local communities/flolocas. Communal meals are common.

    Most community activity is shaped by voluntary altruism since economic fears have been minimised by the devaluation of currency and the housing market (monetary transactions are rare to none). Everyone has a home. Everyone has access to basic life-sustaining needs, such as good organic fresh food, and forces for good (nature). Everyone has access to care. Communal living and shared housing are the norm (yet privacy is still afforded/designed for all).

    Democracy is re-shaped for each human specialism to be able to elect people onto working ethics panels from all other specialisms in any given kinnage, kinnaria or floloca.

    Cherishism is likened to a healthy flowing river full of life-love, joining the global ocean of existence. Each tributary that joins to create the river is vital.

    Tributary One ~ Moral worth

    Every living being is of moral worth afforded by fundamental protection of their function in bioregional flolocas, save for NEED not want. Abundance and diversity are fundamental, and the processes that lead to both must be guarded well (Praximund – laws).

    Plant or animal life scientifically and ethically judged as needed as opposed to wanted by humans, therefore killed, will be agreed with the advice of local Cherishers (who understand local ecologies), and are not conflicted in any way.

    Tributary Two ~ Wellbeing and Welldoing

    ONE HEALTH is standard (human and ecological wellbeing are symbiotic and inseparable). Wellbeing is accessible to all, free at the point of contact. Health professionals and support workers are critical carers (for humans and teresapiens), so we look after them. Healthy organic food and clean water are key, so we look after those workers too. Children are allocated most attention in sustained nurturing and compassion. Welldoing is the act of nurturing wellbeing, and is itself a form of wellbeing. Fit bodies, fit minds. Strong connections in flows. We are all part of nature.

    Anyone who demonstrates their creativity and skills promote wellbeing for all life is valued. Arts, design, music and culture are celebrated and supported, enriching human life and accounting for healthy ecologies/flolocas.

    Carers and facilitators of basic life function are cherished.

    Tributary Three ~ Shared Best Understanding

    Ecoliteracy, Earth systems, and fluminism (all processes to proliferate ecological abundance and diversity, whilst flourishing) are taught freely to every human, and from a young age.

    Teachers and childcarers are critical carers, so we look after them.

    Best science is crucial, freely available after peer review, and must be supported. Evidence-base is a necessity, though ethics applied to consider the direction in terms of planetary wellbeing.

    Indigenous understanding will be of equal standing, but volunteered not appropriated. All efforts are channelled towards the overall aims of Cherishism.

    Tributary Four ~ Free, Elected Ethics Panels

    Ethics panels have an elected, public, democratic role, and open, transparent training (see teachers), is provided to those appointed from all sectors to guide and enlighten, like a jury when introduced to the court system.

    Each member from each general sector in human life can only serve for one term to be agreed by all, with key attention given to the needs of the floloca, children, the vulnerable and elderly, and domestic animals, in space and time.

    One member of the panel is elected to represent the whole panel in bioregional meetings, and so on to global level.

    Annually and at times of need, digital conferences are held to convene all bioregions in global matters and actions advised at a local level.

    In Summary

    As an ecopolitico system, Cherishism provides foundational care for all, with an emphasis on caring for the carers, children and flolocas. It is structural love. Although all have a responsibility to life/love/flows (fluminism), greater social respect is given to those beings that are ‘sacred centres’ for what they do as in all nature, and NOT how much money or property they earn. Rewards are intrinsic and experiential.

    Housing, food, water and heat/cooling and clothing are provided not simply as ‘basic’ things, but comfortable, equitable,beautiful (locally) and ecological. Emphasis is never on collective funds, but collective ability to care, NURTURE KINSHIP, to participate in positive ways to share best understanding (science and/or indigenous, arts, beauty), in order for all life to flourish.

    No financial markets exist. No financial housing/land market exists. No political parties exist, though political education is widely accessible and progress debated. Resilience is found instead within deep, meaningful and loving relationships.

    Licenses for land use with flolocas must pass through all local ethics committees, with the advice of the Cherishers. Public places such as schools, libraries, hospitals and care homes are classed ‘Cherished.’ The ‘Cherish’ (aka communal gathering places where Cherishers are also based), exist in all flolocas and kinnages, and are crucial sacred centres.

    Monetary bonds in materials such as minerals and metals, etc, do exist, but only in supporting extra critical (ONE-HEALTH) health care and compassionate science and communication. Bioregions in the global south will, therefore, benefit greatly, but activity must be ecologically fore-storative by all those who benefit and agreed by local ethics panels.

    Global institutions such as the World Bank and the IMF dissolve from staging posts for markets to collaborative, compassionate shared platforms and portals for knowledge (science, ethics and indigenous understanding), and overseers of peace. Other beneficial life preserving institutions remain like CITES and WHO, etc.

    We all deserve love and security. And so do all fellow living beings/symlings.

    For humans, there needs to be a basic provision of good food, warmth, clothes and shelter, or land to grow things and thrive. We could begin by universal basic income and dedicating a “true” commons of land toward all species.

    For teresapien life, place, interconnectedness and peace.

    In time, we may compassionately end markets as we know them today and adopt an all-nature commons and a gift economy at large. Life should not be a race to be the smartest, cutest, fastest or richest. The only true resistance is to reject this, to embrace compassion, realise a daily ethic of care and make it structural.

    Let us put love back into the meaning of everything we do.

  • Letter to Parents ~ Active Transport Day

    My daughter has been through a huge amount this last few weeks, not least losing a classmate to suicide, worrying about my own isolation due to possible coronavirus infection, potentially transmitting asymptomatically to her grandmother, plus GCSEs now cancelled after she has worked and prepared so hard for them.

    Despite everything, she has prepared an Active Transport Day for next week, which is now cancelled due to school closures.

    I am so proud of her, and she has given me permission to publish the letter she composed, with some statistical help from her friend James, which was to be sent out this week. We hope it may inspire others who might be thinking of arranging similar days at their schools, once normality resumes, as part of a transition to healthier, safer, less air/climate polluting  methods of getting to and from school.

    Dear parents,

    We are writing to inform you of the school’s Active Transport Day which will be taking place on Tuesday 24th March. On this day, we encourage students and parents not to travel to and from school by car, but instead to use more sustainable modes of transport. Our aims in doing this are to reduce air pollution in the local area, to raise awareness of the dangers of air pollution for both children and adults, and to encourage students and parents to pursue a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle.

    Air pollution from vehicles has been proven to cause a wide range of serious health conditions in adults and children. Our local nitrous oxide air pollution levels are routinely over 4 times the NICE recommended safe thresholds, and often break EU legal limits; as a result, lung afflictions pose a particular threat to members of our school community. We ask that you prioritise the safety of the community over convenience when considering your transport options.

    In addition to the health risks of air pollution, the waste products released by vehicles also contribute to a number of dangerous environmental phenomena, most significantly global heating. By continuing to contribute to these problems, not only do we set a bad example for children, we also put our own futures at risk. By participating in Active Travel Day, we can start to make a change.

    On the day, in order to reduce pollution in the local area, we encourage parents to drop off/pick up their children a minimum of 1km from the school. Some convenient locations for parking/drop-off include:

    (example)  – 5-10 minutes’ walk from the school
    (example) – 10-15 minutes’ walk
    (example)  – 15-20 minutes’ walk

    The school car park will be closed all day. We also encourage parents not to use the Pay & Display car park in the High Street; whilst convenient, this is a very popular spot and traffic quickly builds up, meaning car fumes linger on school grounds for much of the day. Given the risks of air pollution to children’s health, we ask that you avoid parking in and around the High Street car park at drop-off/pick-up times when at all possible. At the very least, if you continue to park around the school grounds, please refrain from ‘idling’ and, instead, consider switching off your engine whilst waiting in pick-up areas.

    As parents, you may wonder how you can help your children participate in Active Travel Day, and hopefully transition to more sustainable travel options in the long term. Could they walk or cycle to school at least some of the time? Could they use public transport, which is more sustainable than cars? The school will be happy to offer advice on these issues.

    We look forward to seeing you and your children on Active Travel Day and hope that this letter has given you pause for thought.

  • Bats, love and COVID-19.

    There’s nothing more simple nor complex than love. Love is life-force manifest as relationship, the process of doing that makes life real and meaningful. I call this Fluminism.

    Life is so strikingly complex; a dynamic weave we share no full comprehension, and perhaps never will. In our un-sapient attempt to shrink this world mentally and physically by rationalism, industry (including processed food), and trade, I do not think most could fully even imagine it.

    We are evolved from the most exquisite resistance to, and acceptance of, physical, chemical, and biological forces. We have absorbed them, and them us, and the complexity is magnificent. Like hands around wet clay, they have shaped us down to the atoms within each beautiful cell.

    But they have cost us dearly as we have evolved and adapted through generations, in the loss and grief of loved ones by mistakes, negligence, and more. And so it has been with viruses.

    Since before we can fully imagine, viruses have existed as a shaping force. They emerged early, perhaps, as rogue genetic outliers, or even as replicating co-evolutionary beings, trying to come “home” to living organisms through time and space.

    Unseen by our naked primate eyes, they invade, multiply, and spread. In doing so, they test us sometimes to destruction but strengthen our individual and collective immune systems through survival, adaptation, and diversity. They can even change cell proteins as speciation occurs.

    Without viruses, there could be no us. They are as ancient as all life’s common ancestor. Viruses are critical to climate, and an intimacy; we are clearly symbiotic, but sometimes a profoundly painful commensal or mutualistic symbiosis.

    Coronavirus forcing the disease now called COVID-19 is one of thousands to emerge from, bizarrely, the strong immunity of a fellow symling. In this case, and so frequently with various coronaviruses like SARS and MERS, bats. Coronavirus is a bat mutualistic symbiosis, largely beneficial to them by strengthening their immunity to other microbes. But now we have it,  and it’s killing those with compromised immunity.

    Bats are exceptional mammals, high in metabolism for unique flight, long in age compared to other small mammals, surviving to forty years compared to less than a handful for most terrestrial rodents of the same size. They are beautifully adapted to nurturing one another in the same ancient roosts over millennia. Their sense of place and belonging is strong, and their ecological gift to the community is valuable in so many ways.

    As in all sentient life, their distress causes the release of energy and cellular matter into the nagorasphere. This includes viruses.  We must now understand that bat-immunity is so powerful that it can hold strong against infections that would knock us down in an instant. Bats are distressed by us, with mass light disturbance, forestry logging, and ecological fragmentation via construction, so they shed virus, and the spread of infection multiplies. It’s inevitable this crosses into ecological communities in bat flolocas, including indigenous humans. When wildlife is trafficked for trade and consumption, the viruses follow, mutating and battling stronger to return ‘home’ to any suitable host. They find domestic animals too, especially the more intensely reared, before leaving shadows in our own biological matter,  hospitals, graveyards, and memories.

    COVID-19 is not itself an expression of anything new. In fact, it is pure evolutionary force in our complex world. But its speed and reach in such a shocking short time, and the human curation and management of this spread is a huge mirror reflecting our own deficiencies and impiety towards indigenous and endemic lives, natural forces, and the biosphere. It reveals the shabby cracks of hostile competitiveness, the failures of fast international travel and markets, and false short-cuts away from inequity. But it also presents an opportunity for love, a crystalline perfection of compassion and hope. It may even spur a new era of Cherishism.

    Helping one another is a healing thing. Vaccines will play a part in giving us the anti-bodies without suffering and death. They will help shape us without such huge pain and loss, even though our species will have evaded an evolutionary opportunity for genetic diversity. Epidemics seem inevitable in co-existence with all life in flolocas. But pandemics are there by way of destructive forces, globalised transmission, proliferated by the very same agents that cause Earth Crisis in climate volatility, human inequity, ecological shifts out of the norm for comfort or survival.

    I will leave you with two critical documents that have helped me shape this post. I believe they are powerful, and if shared in common knowledge, empowering too.

    First, a sobering and vital article by Jane Qiu posted at Scientific American on March 11, 2020. It unveils to us all the astonishing work of Wuhan-based virologist Shi Zhengli.

    Remember her name.

    Shi has been instrumental in physically tracking the source of coronaviruses, including COVID-19, to specific bat roosts, enclaves, caves, and flolocas. Her research and wisdom are necessary for discussing the ethical implications of intrinsic and extrinsic relationships with bats. Wildlife, livestock, and even nearby human life can find resistance over longer periods of time, but move or distress bats, wildlife, or domestic animals as reservoir hosts into novel populations, and the results are devastating. We need to learn about these complex flows, for-align them in daily life, and build them into our consciousness as we move away from the Anthropocene and into the Symbiocene.

    Second is this critical appraisal from Berkeley Uni, California, of the astonishing superior immunity of bats compared to our own, which is pathetic by comparison. Bats can teach us so much on immunity, floloca, and in our own behaviours. Praximund must be shown towards them and for our own good too. And onwards into time.

    As part of nature, we may respect the life of fellow symlings, the bats, and offer peace and protection for them. This will be difficult when habitats are valuable to expanding human populations. But it is a process we need to accelerate, to be ahead of any new curve of disease infection rate, instead of having to “flatten it.” We need to be ahead of any of the numerous other novel or bat-surviving viruses ever-patient in finding their moment to “come home”.     As in Earth Crisis itself, there’s a need to pull people towards this kind of love, rather than push, bully, and drive. An ethic of care towards food, water, energy, and shelter for all humans is important, and we must avoid abuse and trade going “underground”. True equity for all life will help solve this and in our responses to COVID-19. Offering structural love and Cherishism as New Measures is a good thing to come to all places, and soon.

  • Cherishism. A new political realm/work in progress.

    Oh life! You can be so brutal.

    This week, a young person, a classmate in my daughter’s year, succumbed to the rawest severity of depression. She took her own life, trapped in that state of belief where there seems no other escape. I understand, because I too have been to the very edge. This young girl, as did my mother and too many beautiful souls, took a step further and now are gone into personal memory and collective history.

    Her classmates, and school, are in shock. I know too, of course, a little of what her family must be going through right now ~ an emotional nuclear bomb blast. Nothing will really be the same again. The loss of someone so young has its very own kind of sting.

    My own daughter is suffering  ~ so much has she carried this last few years. I will take care of her, to the best of my ability. We already have help, but require more now this has happened.

    Last weekend, we needed to see the world continuing on its axis. We needed to feel. I took Gracie and her grandmother to the sea. After her son divorced me after a short separation, we’ve remained polite but not close. This has been her choice, but we all needed big horizons, fresh air, and to be around people who are walking freely about this world as an open, shared experience.

    Cradled between a veil of sunshine, hail showers and a bitter wind, we felt the real warmth of unity as we walked and talked the rhythms of our living coasts. In a cafe at Penarth Pier, we shared cake and hot drinks, watched the sun glowing over a choppy, sediment-laden (another Fluminist blog) Bristol Channel. Flatholm Lighthouse faded in and out of sight on the horizon. It mattered not what we talked about, but that we did. It was our own form of dadirri.

    We all begin life equipped with a few genes and a blank page. It is in the nurturing from that point on where the psyche is shaped in a plethora of heart-healing or heart-stealing moments. It is the gentle or rough brush with events, the places and flolocas we become, the people who impress upon us, and through all our senses.

    As a nation, too much has a popularist, junk hostility poisoned the shaping of the collective psyche. Like the polluted air we breathe ~ too many lives are lost as collateral to this stupid race. Too many loves lost because of fear and money, or a lust for more.

    Here in the UK, our education system is too much, too soon, too competitive and too geared for the growth economy. Like waves rolling in from a vast sea of knowledge, the light and dark, education for its own sake should pulse through the collective, informing and inspiring, and for life-long kicks.

    Competition ~ top marks, looks, jobs, and pay. Everything must be top, but of course which means so many fall way below. Because demand is so high, I’ve heard that some of the most well paid counsellors are school and university employed. The whole broader social, economic and political system is laden, like the sediment in the sea, with stories of broken children who grow up to be broken adults. Mental health services are stretched. It’s a lottery as to who breaks and when. I see some of them in my voluntary work for the witness service at our local Crown Court.

    We all deserve security. A basic income to buy good food, warmth, clothes and shelter, or land to grow things and thrive. Life should not be a race to be the smartest, cutest, fastest or richest. The only true resistance is to reject it somehow, to embrace compassion, realise a daily ethic of care and make it structural. I’ve lost so much and too many to the opposite. I won’t give up on the idea of a very different way of life. I just want society to be so much more caring, to put love back into the meaning of everything we do. I want to call it Cherishism, where cherishment is no longer an obsolete word, and in all aspects of life.

    This is more than kindness where, like tolerance, it can cover and disguise deeper prejudices. A life well lived is one full of meaning and love, young or old. The rest is just anguish, entrapment, broken lives and worse. Climate, biodiversity, equity? As a Fluminist, I believe political Cherishism is the root emergency response.

    I will end with a few questions, as it is good to live the questions (Rilke).

    How can we prune away the hard obstacles in place that make life so difficult? Who can we care for (homosapien or teresapien), as well as caring for ourselves? What language can we change in what we say and write? What could our collective force unleash if Cherishism was the political norm instead of competitive hoarding ~ capitalism ~ or even distributive socialism which finds so much resistance to its (justifiable) anger?

  • Re to For

    New words for new times.

    Modern humans spend a lot more time dwelling on the past rather than contemplating the future. This is reflected in the words we use (as are most things). Times are changing and, with Earth in crisis, we are needing to imagine our futures ~ preferably, good ones.

    With so many things re-quiring a very new approach (at least in living memory), I am beginning to dislike the prefix RE.

    re-wire, re-covery, re-weave, re-wild, re-store – ‘re’ as in to go back. Latin re- again, go back, Latin possibly from PIE ~ wret.

    We need to look forward into newness that’s just. And that needs to be reflected in our language.

    Instead, I propose a whole new suite of words beginning with ‘for’ Old English prefix usually meaning “away, opposite, completely,” but from PIE ‘per’ forward, hence. Per has been adopted in English to mean in front of (as in perform), so I suggest we for-quire FOR as in forward, a well-used term from forth – out and away from a starting point. It is forsilience.

    for-wire, for-cover,  for-weave, for-wild, for-store… and not least, to foreducate…

    Newness ahead.

    I have some exciting news. My treatise and narrative on Fluminism is to be published in Spanish as a 100 page book. Better still, it has been a collaboration of love, kindness and generosity.

    The great ecopoet and moral philosopher, Professor Jorge Riechmann, along with his dedicated community of students in Madrid, have translated it from English to Spanish. It will be published by Ediciones del Genal (the Genal is a beautiful river in the province of Málaga). Also, my photo will feature on the cover.

    I am very honoured. My sincere gratitude to all involved, especially Jorge! The book will be available to purchase. And an online PDF will be available to download…  free!

    Biosemiotics is an increasingly important study for our westernised species Homo hubris. Observant of signs between living beings, it is a process and, therefore, relevant to the ecophilosophy of Fluminism.

    Increasingly, in a volatile and rapidly changing climate, there is a need to draw attention to the signs emanating from ‘above’ – the climatic symbols of change (sometimes violent). The messages from the ‘gods’.

    Picture the smashed car windows from hail, or the coal tip on fire from lightning strikes, the flattening of buildings from violent tornados, man-made reservoirs empty of water, lorries blown over in the wind, wet markets sealed-up with notices and people wearing masks every day of their lives, car factories submerged in stormwater, planes in crosswind landings in lashing rain, failed intensive monocultures subject to drought.

    Gathering storms or searing hot sun rays are portentous. The resulting damage, a sign or symbol. Caelosemiotics.

    Caelo  ~ latin ~ the heavens, weather, climate, sky.

    Semiotics ~ Coined by John Locke from Ancient Greek σημειωτικός for portending, that which is ominous, a calamity to come ~ the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation.

    Caelosemiotics ~ SIGNS of climatic havoc, warnings to all (homosapien and teresapien).
